Our sincerest apologies! There was a miscommunication and guitar will not be offered during the 4-week trial. Below are the updated class descriptions.
Mode Music and Performing Arts is coming to BHIS for a 4-week trial starting on Thursday, November 15. Weekly sessions will be 90-minutes long, from 2:40-4:10pm, and will take place in the gym. Both classes will take place at the same time.
ACOUSTIC ROCK BAND (Grades K-2)
Let’s start a band! Using voices and instruments, percussive and melodic, we will teach the basic fundamentals our very own traveling, acoustic rock band. Students learn hands-on through a variety of popular songs providing education on rhythm, melody, harmony, technique, form and expression in the styles they choose. They will get firsthand experience practicing (and recording) partial and complete songs, starting with covers and moving on to an original and/or parody of their own. All in-class materials will be provided and students will leave with a digital recording of their completed work. No music experience required. A demonstration of learned material will take place the last day of class during the last 30 minutes.
UKULELE FOR ALL! (Grades 3-5)
Come learn ukulele with us! Whether you’ve played before or have never picked one up, our group ukulele class gives students the opportunity to pick up and instrument that they can take with them anytime, anywhere. Basic knowledge of the instrument is introduced while learning to tune, strum, read tablature and read chord charts. Students will leave being able to pick out simple, familiar melodies and play a few 3 chord campfire songs. A demonstration of learned material will take place the last day of class during the last 30 minutes.
Material Fee: $30 for purchase of ukulele (not applicable for students that provide their own)
Payment will be collected at a later time and an invoice will be sent to the email address that you provide during registration. Cost is $15/session or $60 total. Scholarships will be available and families can indicate the need during registration.
Please provide feedback after the trial period so we may tailor future classes.
Don’t forget to turn in your order form and payment for BHIS school spirit gear – for kids & adults – by Friday, November 16th! You can send it in with your child, or you can drop it off at the front desk.
Order forms went home in your child’s backpack a couple weeks ago. Can’t find the form? Print it out here: BHIS Spirit Wear Order Form
You can help the Beacon Hill International School PTA by shopping online at www.bn.com/bookfairs and entering Bookfair ID 12439980 or provide Bookfair ID at checkout at Barnes & Noble stores nationwide through November 7th. So gear up for the Read-a-Thon and purchase some books today!
For the last two years, the school and PTA have paid for notebooks, tissues, markers, pencil, paper and other necessary school supplies. Before we started paying for it, families had to shop for and bring to school about $75 worth of supplies per student every year! We now buy everything at a bulk/discount rate at a cost of $10,000 to uniformly supply our classrooms. But our supply fund is running out!
We’re asking all our families to contribute $10 to $60 per child (as your budget allows) to contribute to classroom supplies. You can either drop an envelope with cash or check – made payable to “Beacon Hill PTA” – in the PTA box at the BHIS front desk, or donate online and note “School Supplies Fund” under “add special instructions to the seller.”
Don’t throw it away – bring it to the recycle center outside Ms. Logel’s Art Room! (Don’t know where the Art Room is? Check the map on page 3 of your School Handbook.)
CARDBOARD: Small boxes that would fit in the recycle center drawers, inserts or interesting cardboard pieces, large boxes can be cut into square or rectangles. Trying to keep sizes under control this year due to space.
PLASTIC: CLEAN Bottle caps and lids in all sizes, small plastic containers-yogurt cups, applesauce/babyfood pouch tops, straws.
OTHER REQUESTS: Fabric, yarn, collections of any sort that could be made into art – old keys, wire, metal pieces, stickers, foils, decorative papers.
OLD MARKERS! We are also participating in the Crayola ColorCycle program to recycle old markers. We’ll take any type of marker – not just Crayola. Highlighters and even dry erase markers! Caps and all can go in the COLORCYCLE BOX outside the art room. They send us free shipping labels and recycle them.
The ColorCycle program has repurposed more than 70 tons of expended markers in the United States and Canada since 2013, and uses the most advanced plastic conversion technologies available today to make wax compounds for asphalt and roofing shingles as well as to generate electricity that can be used to heat homes, cook food, and power vehicles.
